CSS Box Model

Posted by malcolm On July - 28 - 2008

The Box model allows each element on a page to have unique margin, padding, and border settings. The following figure shows the various parts of the box:

A. Margin. B. Border. C. Padding. D. Content width. E. Visible width.

Margins refer to the transparent area surrounding the box, which you set using the margin group of CSS properties. Margins can play an essential role in creating distance between a box and the content surrounding it (such as other boxes), or the boundaries of the page itself. You can set margins for all sides at once or uniquely for each side.

Padding is the distance between the inside edge of the box and its contents; by setting padding, you create space between the box and any text, images, or other contents. You set padding using the padding group of CSS properties, and, like margins, you can set them for all four sides of a box at once or for each side individually.

The border of a box is transparent by default, but you can add width, color, and a border style for decoration or definition around boxes. Borders sit directly between margins and padding, and define the actual boundaries of the box. You set borders using the border group of CSS properties and, like margins and padding, you can define borders for all four sides at once or for each side individually.

7 Ways to Make a good e-mail signature

Posted by malcolm On July - 25 - 2008
  1. Keep it short.  Seven lines is good. Mine happens to be 8, because I also include a row of “=” to separate it from my text.
  2. Keep it simple.  Leave the images for your website.  I’ve also found that images and other “nifty” things make your e-mail more likely to get tagged as spam and lost.
  3. Spell out websites.  Don’t count on the HTML signature to work all the time.  Instead of making a hyperlink like “My website” use http://www.onebyonemedia.com.  This also lets people copy and paste into a browser or contact card.
  4. Only include the information you want to share.  It seems silly, but if you don’t want business calls at home, don’t give out your home phone number.  If you keep one IM account just for friends, don’t put it into your sig file.
  5. Forget the little quotes.  Yeah I had this at one time too.  I even had a random quote generator for a while  While you might think your quote is pithy or wise or funny, it might offend someone or just be confusing.
  6. Don’t attach your contact card by default.  Another potential spam flag and once you’re in my contacts, I don’t need it again and again.
  7. Stick with black text and simple fonts.  Repeat after me, Arial is my friend.  Yes, I know it’s boring.  But it’s also on every machine in the world and it was designed to be easily readable on screen.  Yes, there are some better ones, but Arial is a great baseline.  You can count on it.  Use it.  Arial is your friend.

  1. Make Cut Flowers Last Longer

Add a tablespoon of sugar to a litre of water in the flower vase. The dissolved sugar nourishes the stems and keeps the flowers fresh for longer. If you add a tablespoon of vinegar as well, you won’t get the mould and bacterial growth that causes that bad smell from the water after a few days.

  2. Improve Outdoor Plant Health

If outdoor plants start to look unhealthy and you notice small lumps on the roots, your garden may have a nematode infection. These are tiny worms that invade the root especially in tuberous plants like carrots and potatoes. Mix handfuls of sugar into the soil around infected plants. This increases the numbers of bacteria that can fight the invasion.

  3. Hand Cleaner

Sugar is an abrasive and if you have very dirty, greasy, or oily hands, rubbing them with sugar with clean them.

  4. Wasp Trap

Boil 2 ounces of sugar and a little water in a pan to make a sticky liquid. Pour this into empty jars, or a dish and leave in the open where wasps will be attracted to sweetness. They go into the liquid to feed and cant get out.

  5. Soothe a Burned Tongue

If you have ever burned your tongue on a hot drink, or hot food, you will know how much it hurts. Sprinkle sugar on it and the pain will subside.

  6. Kill Cockroaches

Mix equal parts of sugar and baking powder. Sugar attracts these horrible creatures and baking powder kills them.

  7. Fly Catcher

Boil half a litre of water, sugar, pepper (about a teaspoonful) and two tablespoons of water together and place in a bowl. This will attract flies and they will fall into the liquid.

  8. Start a Fire

If you have trouble getting a coal, or wood fire to burn throw a handful of sugar onto it. The sugar will ignite and help get the fire going.

  9. Keep Biscuits Fresh

Put a few sugar lumps in the bottom of your biscuit tin. The lumps will absorb the moisture and keep the biscuits fresh.

  10. Keep Cake Fresh

Sprinkle home-made cakes with sugar while they are still hot. This keeps them fresh longer.

Enable curl with XAMPP on Windows XP

Posted by malcolm On July - 4 - 2008

To enable curl library with XAMPP we need to modify the php.ini files in our xampp folder.

1) Locate the following files:
<dir where xampp is installed>\apache\bin\php.ini

2) Uncomment the following line on your php.ini file by removing the semicolon.

;extension=php_curl.dll

3) Restart your apache server.

4) Check your phpinfo if curl was properly enabled.
